RPI finished off its early season non-conference play by hosting UConn for a weekend pair at Houston Field House. The Engineers soundly defeated the Huskies in a 3-0 shutout on Friday, but the tables were turned Saturday as UConn took a 4-1 victory in the rematch.

Lovisa Selander earned her first shutout of the season in a 3-0 victory over UConn Friday night, also notching an assist on the Engineers' first goal. Six other players each tallied a point on the evening, while Marisa Raspa led the team in shots with seven.
RPI scored once in each period, starting out with a goal by Makenna Thomas at 5:45 of the opening frame. Thomas skated in one-on-one and put a shot off the pipe and in to give the Engineers a 1-0 lead.
Amanda Kimmerle made it a 2-0 game at 17:48 of the second period, firing a rocket of a shot through traffic from the point to beat a screened Annie Belanger.
Hannah Behounek grew the lead to 3-0 8:59 into the final period, an impressive unassisted tally where she picked up the puck in the neutral zone, skated in one-on-three and still managed to get the puck past Belanger.

After a good win on Friday night, the Engineers didn't fare so well on Saturday - defeated by UConn 4-1 while being outshot 35-22. Aly Tremblay scored the Engineers' lone goal, while the Huskies' second line of Leah Lum, Briana Colangelo, and Theresa Knutson combined for a 3-6-9 line on the afternoon.
Lum was responsible for two goals, both scored in a first period which saw the Engineers outshot 16-2. Both goals were assisted by Colangelo and Knutson.
After a scoreless second period, RPI drew to within one on Tremblay's goal at 5:05 of the third. The Engineers found themselves back in a two-goal hole shortly after when Knutson scored to make it 3-1.
With the RPI net empty in favor of the extra attacker to get back to 5-on-5 during a penalty kill, UConn put the game away with a goal from Madison Badeau.
Morgan Fisher earned the win in the Huskies' net in her first collegiate appearance, making 21 saves on 22 shots. Lovisa Selander stopped 31 of 34 shots she faced on the afternoon.
RPI now takes a weekend off before opening up ECAC play at home against Cornell and Colgate on October 28th and 29th. Both games will have 3pm start times as the men also host Union the evening of the 28th.

The Great Plains
Neither the men nor the women got off to the starts they wanted - but the women may have turned the corner a bit last night with a 3-0 victory at home against UConn, and the men have at least the opportunity to mimic last season with a tough game against the #1 team in the nation.
For the third straight year (2014 - Minnesota, 2015 - Boston College) the Engineers' second opponent of the year is the #1 team in the nation. For RPI (0-2-0), it's not looking like a game that's going to produce a result. The goal tonight against North Dakota (2-0-0) is to take strides from last week's pair of losses in Maine - get shots on goal. Finish when possible. Hopefully, don't get destroyed. Then take what you learn in playing against the very best and apply it at home next weekend against not the very best.
The women (2-4-1) got themselves off a five game winless streak with their first shutout of the season, at home against UConn last night, a 21-save shutout for Lovisa Selander that included the third goals of the season for both Makenna Thomas and Hannah Behounek. Bearing Down
Fair warning this season - there's probably going to be a lot of Tragically Hip in the pumpup rotation in the approaching months. That's just how it's going to be. I know our Canadian audience won't have much of a problem with that. Americans, just avail yourself the opportunity to soak in a band you should have been listening to years ago - their lead singer, Gord Downie, was diagnosed with glioblastoma, an uncurable brain tumor recently and they just concluded what may be their final tour back in August.
Anyway. The women (1-3-0) were in Maine a couple of weeks ago and got their season off on the right foot with a victory, but they've dropped three in a row since, including both games at home to Ohio State. The Buckeyes are battle-tested, playing in a league that, to paraphase a coach out there in the midwest, is "women only." The ECAC's no slouch, but the WCHA is a war, night in and night out, which is a good reason why they've produced all but one of the women's hockey national champions. Robert Morris (2-0-0) may not be much of a respite for the Engineers, especially as they travel to Pittsburgh to do battle with the Colonials. RPI dropped a pair at home to RMU last season, and the Colonials are off with a road sweep of Providence to kick off their season. Another tough pair coming up for the Engineers this weekend.

It's never easy to go on the road and get two wins, but against the Black Bears (0-0-0), picked to finish last in Hockey East, RPI's probably going to want to at least pick up a split in this series if they want to start off on the right foot.
So for the first time this season - and sorry about missing the last two weeks - turn the speakers up and get in the mood for some hockey. Four games this weekend for the first time since February.

Women's Hockey - Ohio State (30 Sep / 1 Oct)
RPI fell behind early against Ohio State Friday afternoon and never recovered, needing a last-minute goal to avoid a shutout in a 4-1 loss.
Saturday didn't go much better, with the Engineers being shutout 2-0 despite outshooting their visitors by a 33-23 margin (and 35-22 the day before).

Ohio State scored three goals in the first period, including two in the game's opening two minutes, en route to a 4-1 victory over RPI at Houston Field House on Friday. Sabrina Repaci scored the Engineers' only goal - an extra attacker power play tally with four seconds left in the game.
Samantha Bouley opened the scoring for the Buckeyes 1:03 into the game, picking up a rebound and putting it past Lovisa Selander for the early 1-0 lead.
Erin Langermeier doubled that lead to 2-0 just 45 seconds later, stealing the puck as the Engineers attempted to exit their zone and skating in alone to beat Selander with a backhand shot on the breakaway.
OSU scored one more in the first period off the stick of Jincy Dunne, who fired a shot from the point through traffic, preventing Selander from getting a good read on the shot.
After a scoreless second period, things went from bad to worse for RPI at the Buckeyes made it a 4-0 game when Katie Matheny grabbed a bouncing puck in the RPI zone and found herself all alone with Selander much like Langermeier had earlier in the game.
Repaci's goal came with the net empty and on the Engineers' eighth power play of the evening. After several attempts were turned aside by Kassidy Sauve, the puck bounced out to Repaci in the slot who put it in with 3.9 seconds left to spoil Sauve's shutout bid.
It was not a great evening for Selander, who allowed four goals on 22 shots, or for the Engineers' offense, which managed just the single late goal despite putting 35 shots on net.

The Engineers had several power play chances early in the game, including a short stretch of 5-on-3, but couldn't break through for an early lead. Instead it was Maddy Field scoring on a breakaway for the Buckeyes with 35 seconds left in the opening frame.
Hannah Behounek was penalized for slashing on the play, and on the ensuing power play, the Buckeyes capitalized to make it a 2-0 game 40 seconds into the second period. Jessica Dunne fired a shot from the point which was tipped past Selander at the top of the crease by Maddy Field. The play was set up by Jincy Dunne who narrowly kept the puck in the zone after an RPI clearing attempt.
It was another disappointing day for the RPI power play, which went scoreless again on seven more opportunities. The Engineers have now scored just one goal in the past three games - a 6-on-4 extra attacker goal - and will need to scrounge up some scoring to improve the outcome of coming games.
RPI hits the road for a pair at Robert Morris next weekend before returning home to play UConn twice to close out the early season non-conference schedule.

Women's Hockey - at Maine (24/25 Sep)
The 2016-17 season got underway this past weekend with RPI traveling to Orono for a weekend pair against Maine. After playing a solid game on Saturday afternoon and skating to a 3-1 victory, the Engineers fell short on Saturday, getting shut out 2-0 in the weekend's second game.

Lovisa Selander stopped 25 of 26 and Laura Horwood tallied a goal and an assist en route to a 3-1 victory over Maine on Saturday afternoon. Makenna Thomas and Hannah Behounek also scored for the Engineers, making it three unanswered goals after Maine took a quick 1-0 lead just 17 seconds into the second period.
Rather than get shellshocked by the early goal, Horwood answered just 23 seconds later, with a nifty move and a top shelf shot to beat netminder Carly Jackson and tie the game.
Thomas scored at 7:45 of the middle frame, with asissts to Ana Orzechowski and Lindsey Hylwa, giving the Engineers a 2-1 lead.
That lead grew to 3-1 in the middle of the third period after Maine's Tereza Vanisova was sent off on a five-minute major for boarding. About two minutes into that power play, a checking call put the Engineers two skaters up and Horwood took advantage, dropping down into the faceoff circle to score the Engineers' third goal.
RPI outshot Maine 29-26 on the afternoon, with Horwood leading the way with seven shots and Jamie Grigsby and Katie Rooney tacking on four each.

After opening the season with a win, RPI couldn't maintain the momentum for a weekend sweep, falling 2-0 to Maine on Saturday afternoon. Selander made 29 saves in the loss while Mariah Fujimagari earned the shutout for the Black Bears.
It was another early second period goal on Saturday, with Kara Washer scoring on the power play just 22 seconds into the second. This time around, the Engineers didn't have an answer, and though the teams traded penalties throughout the rest of the second, it went scoreless until 9:41 of the third when Vanisova made it a 2-0 lead for Maine.
The Engineers spent the final minute with the extra attacker but couldn't find the back of the net.
RPI will continue non-conference play and hit the ice at Houston Field House for the first time next weekend as Ohio State comes to Troy.

It was another early second period goal on Saturday, with Kara Washer scoring on the power play just 22 seconds into the second. This time around, the Engineers didn't have an answer, and though the teams traded penalties throughout the rest of the second, it went scoreless until 9:41 of the third when Vanisova made it a 2-0 lead for Maine.
The Engineers spent the final minute with the extra attacker but couldn't find the back of the net.
RPI will continue non-conference play and hit the ice at Houston Field House for the first time next weekend as Ohio State comes to Troy.

Women's Hockey - ECAC Quarterfinals (26/27 Feb)
RPI - and more specifically Lovisa Selander - gave a valiant effort in the Engineers' ECAC Quarterfinal matchup against Quinnipiac, but in the end fell short in a pair of overtime games.
The Bobcats defeated RPI 3-2 in overtime on Friday afternoon, then the Engineers held on well into double-overtime on Saturday before eventually succumbing in a 2-1 loss.

Lovisa Selander finished with 57 saves on 60 shots, while the Engineers managed a record-low seven shots against Sydney Rossman.
The first RPI goal came off the stick of Jaimie Grigsby when she broke in all alone on Rossman with two minutes left in the second period. Taking the puck straight down the middle, she fired a quick wrister past Rossman for the 1-0 lead.
Josefine Hansen made that lead 2-0 a short 1:29 later with a rocket of a slapshot from the blue line that found the top corner of the net.
The Engineers ended the second period up 2-0 despite being outshot 36-5. Unfortunately that would catch up with them in the third as the Bobcats bounced back to tie the game.
In addition to the overtime game winner, Emma Woods got the Bobcats on the board at 3:52 of the third, on a third try in front of the crease after Selander stopped Taylar Cianfarano's point blank chance.
Nicole Connery tied the game at two at 7:39 with a sharp angle shot that snuck over Selander's shoulder and just under the crossbar.
After regulation ended with the teams tied at two, it didn't take a lot of overtime for Quinnipiac to earn the win. At 2:04 of extra time, Cianfarano put another shot on Selander which was turned away, but the puck caromed off a crashing Woods' leg and into the net. Though the officials reviewed the play, the goal stood and the Bobcats took a 1-0 series lead heading into Saturday's game.

With the other series complete, St. Lawrence will face Quinnipiac in the ECAC semifinals while Colgate will go up against Clarkson. Both games, along with the championship game, will take place in Hamden as Quinnipiac hosts as the #1 seed.
The losses spelled the end of the Engineers' season and they will look toward next year with a positive outlook with Selander in net, but needing to solve some offensive and defensive woes if they are to move up in the ECAC. It was a common theme for RPI to be heavily outshot this season, reflected in Selander setting the school record for saves in a season with 1058, and a .939 save percentage that was good for seventh in the nation, despite the team finishing eighth in the ECAC.
Outstanding goaltending will not take the Engineers anywhere if they can't shore up the play in front of Selander in the coming seasons, as Union has proven over several years with dismal finishes despite having several top notch goaltenders come through the program.

Women's Hockey - at Princeton & Quinnipiac (19/20 Feb)
RPI managed one final point on the road against Princeton and Quinnipiac to end the regular season, and it turned out to be a difference-maker as the Engineers finished in the final playoff spot by just a single point.
That point came in a 3-3 tie against Princeton on Friday, before the Engineers were outclassed by Quinnipiac to the tune of a 4-0 loss on Saturday.

Despite being outshot 53-27, RPI managed to put three pucks past Kimberly Newell to earn a 3-3 tie against Princeton Friday evening. Shayna Tomlinson had two goals for the Engineers while Alexa Gruschow had a goal and an assist.
The game got off to a quick start, with the teams trading a lot of shots early in the first, but it was Princeton eventually breaking through when Fiona McKenna snuck a bad-angle shot off the rush past Lovisa Selander for a 1-0 lead.
Tomlinson scored both of her goals in the second period. The first came at 6:15 - from an even worse angle than McKenna's goal, as Tomlinson found the top corner from below the bottom of the faceoff circles.
Her second was a deflection, tipping a point shot from Amanda Kimmerle to put RPI ahead 2-1.
Princeton tied the game at 11:42 on a Kiersten Falck goal, but Gruschow answered just 41 seconds later to regain the lead for RPI.
Karlie Lund spoiled the potential upset for the Engineers by tying the game once again with 3:01 left in regulation. The teams only managed one shot each in overtime as the game ended with a 3-3 final.

After destroying Union 9-0 on Friday, Quinnipiac kept rolling on Saturday by defeating RPI 4-0, outshooting the Engineers 52-14 in the process.
Emma Grecco scored the first goal and eventual game-winner, firing a blast from the point through traffic and past Selander.
RPI had three consecutive power play opportunities in the middle of the first period, including nearly a minute of 5-on-3, but couldn't capitalize - and in fact only managed six shots in the opening frame despite the power plays.
Things got worse in the second as Quinnipiac piled on three more goals and outshot the Engineers 21-2. A faceoff win led to a quick opportunity for Nicole Brown, who made a couple quick moves for an easy backhand past Selander to make it 2-0 just 3:20 into the second period.
Less than a minute later, Kristen Tamberg scored on a cross-ice feed from Brown - a power play goal to make it 3-0. Nicole Connery extended the lead to four at 16:08 with a quick shot off a feed from behind the net that the RPI defense never picked up.
Selander held the lead to four despite facing another 21 shots in the third period, finishing with 48 saves on 52 shots Saturday and a combined 98 for 105 on the weekend.
RPI's one point weekend was not enough on its own to secure a playoff spot - instead it came down to a Clarkson goal, scored in the final minute of their game against Yale, to knock the Bulldogs out of the playoffs and land the Engineers in the eighth and final spot. With that, the playoff matchups for next weekend's ECAC quarterfinals are set:

#7 Cornell at #2 Clarkson
#6 St. Lawrence at #3 Princeton

All four series will run Friday through Sunday (if necessary) at the home rink of the higher seeds. The championship weekend will be the following weekend at the home rink of the highest remaining seed.
The road to the championship weekend will be an extremely tough one for the Engineers, as it runs through an extremely strong Quinnipiac team which has been ranked in the top 5 nationally since Thanksgiving and just soundly defeated them in the regular season finale.
RPI will be counting on Selander to hold strong in net, but they are going to need to find a couple goals to have any chance - in the two matchups with the Bobcats this season, the Engineers were held scoreless and outshot by a combined 92-29 margin.

Despite being outshot 53-27, RPI managed to put three pucks past Kimberly Newell to earn a 3-3 tie against Princeton Friday evening. Shayna Tomlinson had two goals for the Engineers while Alexa Gruschow had a goal and an assist.
The game got off to a quick start, with the teams trading a lot of shots early in the first, but it was Princeton eventually breaking through when Fiona McKenna snuck a bad-angle shot off the rush past Lovisa Selander for a 1-0 lead.
Tomlinson scored both of her goals in the second period. The first came at 6:15 - from an even worse angle than McKenna's goal, as Tomlinson found the top corner from below the bottom of the faceoff circles.
Her second was a deflection, tipping a point shot from Amanda Kimmerle to put RPI ahead 2-1.
Princeton tied the game at 11:42 on a Kiersten Falck goal, but Gruschow answered just 41 seconds later to regain the lead for RPI.
Karlie Lund spoiled the potential upset for the Engineers by tying the game once again with 3:01 left in regulation. The teams only managed one shot each in overtime as the game ended with a 3-3 final.

After destroying Union 9-0 on Friday, Quinnipiac kept rolling on Saturday by defeating RPI 4-0, outshooting the Engineers 52-14 in the process.
Emma Grecco scored the first goal and eventual game-winner, firing a blast from the point through traffic and past Selander.
RPI had three consecutive power play opportunities in the middle of the first period, including nearly a minute of 5-on-3, but couldn't capitalize - and in fact only managed six shots in the opening frame despite the power plays.
Things got worse in the second as Quinnipiac piled on three more goals and outshot the Engineers 21-2. A faceoff win led to a quick opportunity for Nicole Brown, who made a couple quick moves for an easy backhand past Selander to make it 2-0 just 3:20 into the second period.
Less than a minute later, Kristen Tamberg scored on a cross-ice feed from Brown - a power play goal to make it 3-0. Nicole Connery extended the lead to four at 16:08 with a quick shot off a feed from behind the net that the RPI defense never picked up.
Selander held the lead to four despite facing another 21 shots in the third period, finishing with 48 saves on 52 shots Saturday and a combined 98 for 105 on the weekend.
RPI's one point weekend was not enough on its own to secure a playoff spot - instead it came down to a Clarkson goal, scored in the final minute of their game against Yale, to knock the Bulldogs out of the playoffs and land the Engineers in the eighth and final spot. With that, the playoff matchups for next weekend's ECAC quarterfinals are set:
#8 RPI at #1 Quinnipiac
#7 Cornell at #2 Clarkson
#6 St. Lawrence at #3 Princeton
#5 Harvard at #4 Colgate
All four series will run Friday through Sunday (if necessary) at the home rink of the higher seeds. The championship weekend will be the following weekend at the home rink of the highest remaining seed.
The road to the championship weekend will be an extremely tough one for the Engineers, as it runs through an extremely strong Quinnipiac team which has been ranked in the top 5 nationally since Thanksgiving and just soundly defeated them in the regular season finale.
RPI will be counting on Selander to hold strong in net, but they are going to need to find a couple goals to have any chance - in the two matchups with the Bobcats this season, the Engineers were held scoreless and outshot by a combined 92-29 margin.

Quinnipiac is good at hockey right now, there's no denying that. Whether it's the men or the women, they're dominating the ECAC and that's a long way from where they were a decade ago when they joined our little club.
But we haven't lost to them this year. Not yet, anyway.
It's going to be hard to keep that intact this weekend. The women put up a brave stand against the Bobcats in January, fighting their way to a 0-0 draw in Troy. It won't be nearly as "easy" to do that on the road tomorrow - but hopefully, if everything shakes out well, the playoffs won't still be on the line. They can help themselves with that by getting at least some result against an almost as difficult Princeton team tonight. (As an aside, don't expect Quinnipiac to let off the gas pedal tomorrow. Barring a miracle, they will have nothing to play for in terms of ECAC positioning, but they're still trying to fight off Clarkson in the Pairwise.)
Nine seconds. Before last weekend, that's as close as anyone came in regulation to handing Quinnipiac their first loss in ECAC play (and they still haven't lost one in regulation). Can home ice make the difference tonight? If so, RPI's back in the fight for the top four. Women's Hockey - Harvard & Dartmouth (12/13 Feb)
The Engineers did a great job in their final home series of the season, skating to a 1-1 tie with Harvard Friday night before beating Dartmouth 2-1 on Saturday.
Despite taking three points on the weekend, however, RPI was unable to lock down a playoff spot as both Cornell and Yale finished the weekend still within striking distance of the Engineers.

RPI was outshot 43-26 by Harvard, but Lovisa Selander held the Crimson to a single goal while Shayna Tomlinson scored for the Engineers in a 1-1 tie on Friday.
Tomlinson's goal came 5:04 into the second period after both Alexa Gruschow and Laura Horwood had shots turned aside. Tomlinson found the loose puck in the crease and whacked it past Emerance Maschmeyer to give the Engineers the lead.
Grace Zarzecki drew the Crimson even about ten minutes later, capitalizing on a turnover in the RPI defensive zone to put a shot past Selander before the netminder could get set for the shot.
Selander and Maschmeyer locked things down after the tying goal, combining for a total of 67 saves - though 42 of those were by Selander in an outstanding effort.
The Engineers managed to kill two penalties in the third, including one which lasted well into overtime, and Selander turned away four Crimson shots in bonus time to earn a point for the 1-1 tie.

After tying Harvard Friday night, the Engineers pulled clear of Dartmouth in the battle for a playoff spot by beating the Big Green 2-1 on Saturday afternoon. Brandi Banks and Taylor Schwalbe scored for the Engineers, and Selander made 28 saves after entering the game at the first whistle to replace Sara Till who started in net for Senior Day.
Dartmouth jumped out to a 1-0 lead at 5:48 of the opening period, a goal by Alyssa Baker that was initially waved off for being kicked in, but ruled a good goal after being reviewed.
Banks got the Engineers on the board with just 13 seconds left in the middle frame, holding on to the puck on a 3-on-1 and firing it past Robyn Chemago to knot things at one. The goal came after a close call a little earlier in the second where a Dartmouth 2-on-0 resulted in a shot wide of the RPI net.
Schwalbe scored the game-winner at 14:36 of the third, poking the puck away from Tess Bracken in the neutral zone to spring herself on a breakaway which she fired home to put RPI ahead 2-1.
Selander had to make a few big saves at Dartmouth pushed for the equalizer, including a dangerous flurry in the game's final seconds.
RPI's win over Dartmouth put them five points ahead of the Big Green - out of reach with just two games left. The Engineers sit tied with SLU for sixth, with Yale and Cornell trailing by one and two points respectively going into the season's final weekend.
Three points next weekend (a tall order on the road against Princeton and Quinnipiac) would lock down a playoff spot for the Engineers regardless of other results, however things are likely to be a little less cut and dry than that as Cornell has a decent shot against both Dartmouth and Harvard. A loss for the Big Red in either game would guarantee the Engineers a playoff spot.

Three points next weekend (a tall order on the road against Princeton and Quinnipiac) would lock down a playoff spot for the Engineers regardless of other results, however things are likely to be a little less cut and dry than that as Cornell has a decent shot against both Dartmouth and Harvard. A loss for the Big Red in either game would guarantee the Engineers a playoff spot.

Strength, Weakness, Opportunity, Threat
You have to play to your strengths, and you have to mitigate your weaknesses. For the men, that's standing strong on defense and getting enough offense to get by. They have done neither for the last two weeks and it's threatening to derail what had been an outstanding application this season.
Now mired in the mess that always is the middle of the ECAC in February, they're tied for 4th but sitting in 6th, a point away from 8th while sitting three points behind the tie for 2nd. At this point, 4th might be the best case scenario, especially considering the caliber of teams remaining. But that fight has got to begin this weekend on the road at a Harvard team licking its Beanpot wounds and a Dartmouth team that's looks erratic but actually has a pretty stark ECAC reality - they're 0-6-0 against the three teams ahead of them in the league standings (Quinnipiac, Yale, and Harvard) and 9-1-0 against everyone else (who loses to Union? Honestly?). They've been winning the games they're supposed to win. Considering they've already beaten RPI, and on the road, Saturday's game counts there too.
Opportunity knocks for the women tonight. Three points ahead of Cornell and firmly holding the tiebreaker with the Big Red, they are essentially four points up and they've got a big matchup tonight at home against Harvard. I know what you're thinking - Harvard's a national power. Well, this year... look, it's not so cut and dried. They only beat the Engineers 2-1 at home back in November, and more to the point - they TIED BROWN. At home. Last weekend. That's not a team that's firing on all cylinders, and the Engineers get them at home tonight. With every point precious, now's the time to strike. Dartmouth awaits on Saturday and their season has been in a complete spiral for two and a half months. Their win over Brown last Saturday was their first W in that entire time span.

Women's Hockey - at Clarkson & St. Lawrence (5/6 Feb)
In the effort to hold on to the eighth playoff spot, points are obviously important, and RPI managed to steal one on Saturday in a 1-1 tie against St. Lawrence. Lovisa Selander made 48 saves in the game.
It was a better result than Friday night, which saw the Engineers give up three goals each period to Clarkson en route to a 9-1 loss.

Alexa Gruschow scored for RPI in the first period, but the Engineers couldn't hold Clarkson from scoring at will in a 9-1 loss Friday night in Potsdam. Lauren Lefler notched two goals and a assist while Genevieve Bannon and Renata Fast both went 1-2-3 for the Golden Knights.
Fast and Bannon got the Golden Knights off to a 2-0 lead early in the first period. Cassidy Vinkle found Fast with a blind backhand pass for the first tally, then Bannon beat Selander five-hole less than two minutes later to make it 2-0.
Gruschow's goal came at 7:21 when Shayna Tomlinson made a slick backhand pass of her own to hit Gruschow on the doorstep to beat Shea Tiley and cut RPI's deficit to one.
The Clarkson lead was back to two by 8:47 of the first when Lefler scored her first of the night. That marked the end of the night for Selander, who was pulled in favor of Kira Bombay after surrendering three goals on four shots to start the game.
Clarkson went on to score three more goals in each of the second and third periods, starting off with a power play goal in each. Loren Gabel and Jessica Gillham scored 23 seconds apart early in the second to make a 3-1 lead into a 5-1 lead, and Shannon MacAulay tacked on one more later in the middle frame with a smooth backhander from just outside the blue paint to beat Bombay.
Erin Ambrose picked up another power play goal at 8:14 of the third, firing a rocket through traffic from the point. Lefler's second of the game came at 15:25 as she found a loose puck behind Bombay in the crease and poked it home, and Kelly Mariani closed out the scoring just 39 seconds later to give the game its final 9-1 score. Sara Till came into the game after the ninth goal, playing the final 3:56 and stopping the one save she faced.
The loss was RPI's most lopsided since being shutout 10-0 at Clarkson on November 5, 2011.

After being relieved of her duties early Friday night, Lovisa Selander bounced back with a spectacular effort on Saturday, making 48 saves to help RPI hold on for a 1-1 tie against St. Lawrence in Canton. It was a long time to hold on, too, as Laura Horwood's tally for the Engineers came just 26 seconds into the game.
Horwood's goal came on the game's opening shift as she crashed the net and received a feed from Shayna Tomlinson behind the net. The junior was able to capitalize on SLU's Grace Harrison losing track of the puck to put it in the back of the net before the netminder could figure out where it had gone.
RPI killed two consecutive penalties early in the second to maintain the lead, but after the teams traded additional penalties, the Engineers found themselves in a 4-on-3 shorthanded situation where the Saints were able to capitalize. Hannah Miller earned that goal with a blast from the faceoff dot which threaded through traffic and past Selander to tie the game at one.
The Engineers and Saints traded penalties in the third, and as the clock wound down on regulation, RPI went on the power play with just 11 seconds left on the clock. That power play would carry over into overtime, but the Engineers couldn't score on their three overtime shots.
Of Selander's 48 saves, 23 came in the second period alone, with 14 more in the third.
With the one-point weekend, the Engineers remain in eighth place, three points behind sixth-place SLU, two points behind seventh-place Yale, three points ahead of Cornell and four in front of Dartmouth with four games to play.
RPI's final home games of the season come next weekend against Harvard (7pm Friday) and Dartmouth (4pm Saturday). An RPI win over Dartmouth next weekend would ensure the Big Green could not overtake the Engineers in the standings, at worst leaving it to tiebreakers to decide a potential tie. But more importantly the Engineers likely need to take two points next weekend to keep ahead of Cornell, which has winnable games against Brown, Yale, and Dartmouth left on the schedule, while RPI closes with a tough road trip to Princeton and Quinnipiac.

It was a better result than Friday night, which saw the Engineers give up three goals each period to Clarkson en route to a 9-1 loss.

Alexa Gruschow scored for RPI in the first period, but the Engineers couldn't hold Clarkson from scoring at will in a 9-1 loss Friday night in Potsdam. Lauren Lefler notched two goals and a assist while Genevieve Bannon and Renata Fast both went 1-2-3 for the Golden Knights.
Fast and Bannon got the Golden Knights off to a 2-0 lead early in the first period. Cassidy Vinkle found Fast with a blind backhand pass for the first tally, then Bannon beat Selander five-hole less than two minutes later to make it 2-0.
Gruschow's goal came at 7:21 when Shayna Tomlinson made a slick backhand pass of her own to hit Gruschow on the doorstep to beat Shea Tiley and cut RPI's deficit to one.
The Clarkson lead was back to two by 8:47 of the first when Lefler scored her first of the night. That marked the end of the night for Selander, who was pulled in favor of Kira Bombay after surrendering three goals on four shots to start the game.
Clarkson went on to score three more goals in each of the second and third periods, starting off with a power play goal in each. Loren Gabel and Jessica Gillham scored 23 seconds apart early in the second to make a 3-1 lead into a 5-1 lead, and Shannon MacAulay tacked on one more later in the middle frame with a smooth backhander from just outside the blue paint to beat Bombay.
Erin Ambrose picked up another power play goal at 8:14 of the third, firing a rocket through traffic from the point. Lefler's second of the game came at 15:25 as she found a loose puck behind Bombay in the crease and poked it home, and Kelly Mariani closed out the scoring just 39 seconds later to give the game its final 9-1 score. Sara Till came into the game after the ninth goal, playing the final 3:56 and stopping the one save she faced.
The loss was RPI's most lopsided since being shutout 10-0 at Clarkson on November 5, 2011.

After being relieved of her duties early Friday night, Lovisa Selander bounced back with a spectacular effort on Saturday, making 48 saves to help RPI hold on for a 1-1 tie against St. Lawrence in Canton. It was a long time to hold on, too, as Laura Horwood's tally for the Engineers came just 26 seconds into the game.
Horwood's goal came on the game's opening shift as she crashed the net and received a feed from Shayna Tomlinson behind the net. The junior was able to capitalize on SLU's Grace Harrison losing track of the puck to put it in the back of the net before the netminder could figure out where it had gone.
RPI killed two consecutive penalties early in the second to maintain the lead, but after the teams traded additional penalties, the Engineers found themselves in a 4-on-3 shorthanded situation where the Saints were able to capitalize. Hannah Miller earned that goal with a blast from the faceoff dot which threaded through traffic and past Selander to tie the game at one.
The Engineers and Saints traded penalties in the third, and as the clock wound down on regulation, RPI went on the power play with just 11 seconds left on the clock. That power play would carry over into overtime, but the Engineers couldn't score on their three overtime shots.
Of Selander's 48 saves, 23 came in the second period alone, with 14 more in the third.
With the one-point weekend, the Engineers remain in eighth place, three points behind sixth-place SLU, two points behind seventh-place Yale, three points ahead of Cornell and four in front of Dartmouth with four games to play.
RPI's final home games of the season come next weekend against Harvard (7pm Friday) and Dartmouth (4pm Saturday). An RPI win over Dartmouth next weekend would ensure the Big Green could not overtake the Engineers in the standings, at worst leaving it to tiebreakers to decide a potential tie. But more importantly the Engineers likely need to take two points next weekend to keep ahead of Cornell, which has winnable games against Brown, Yale, and Dartmouth left on the schedule, while RPI closes with a tough road trip to Princeton and Quinnipiac.

Making It Mean
It's Freakout! weekend again. We hardly need to elaborate.
But for the men, there's an important point that needs to be made. After this weekend, the next three games are Harvard on the road, Dartmouth on the road, Quinnipiac at home (as in #1 Quinnipiac). That's a tough slog for anyone. And here's RPI. 1 point out of 2nd (Harvard), 1 point ahead of 4th (Yale). Points are going to be hard to come by in the next three games after this weekend - not that they're impossible or anything, just that they're not going to be quite as forthcoming as they should be at home on Freakout! weekend against a St. Lawrence team that's winless in 6 of their last 7 on the road and a Clarkson team that was 2-6 in the eight games before their current 5-game unbeaten streak (four of which were at home, three of those against Brown, Colgate and a free-falling Cornell).
No points are easy. It's just... RPI could probably use a bit of a cushion, and now, if they're going to be a serious player for a bye.
The women have a war on their hands for a playoff spot, and if they don't have one by season's end, they'll have to stare at being swept on the season by Yale as the culprit. And the North Country is never a picnic. But they've nabbed a win over Clarkson this season and St. Lawrence is but a point ahead in the standings. We've seen results from longer odds before.
February's always a time to be a mean team to play against. Let's get mean.
By the way... Tom is currently (as of this afternoon) doing an Ask Me Anything on the college hockey Reddit. Drop by and ask him, er, anything.
