Fair warning this season - there's probably going to be a lot of Tragically Hip in the pumpup rotation in the approaching months. That's just how it's going to be. I know our Canadian audience won't have much of a problem with that. Americans, just avail yourself the opportunity to soak in a band you should have been listening to years ago - their lead singer, Gord Downie, was diagnosed with glioblastoma, an uncurable brain tumor recently and they just concluded what may be their final tour back in August.
Anyway. The women (1-3-0) were in Maine a couple of weeks ago and got their season off on the right foot with a victory, but they've dropped three in a row since, including both games at home to Ohio State. The Buckeyes are battle-tested, playing in a league that, to paraphase a coach out there in the midwest, is "women only." The ECAC's no slouch, but the WCHA is a war, night in and night out, which is a good reason why they've produced all but one of the women's hockey national champions. Robert Morris (2-0-0) may not be much of a respite for the Engineers, especially as they travel to Pittsburgh to do battle with the Colonials. RPI dropped a pair at home to RMU last season, and the Colonials are off with a road sweep of Providence to kick off their season. Another tough pair coming up for the Engineers this weekend.
The men (0-0-0) are two weeks behind the women in kicking off their season at Alfond Arena in Orono. It's never easy to go on the road and get two wins, but against the Black Bears (0-0-0), picked to finish last in Hockey East, RPI's probably going to want to at least pick up a split in this series if they want to start off on the right foot.
So for the first time this season - and sorry about missing the last two weeks - turn the speakers up and get in the mood for some hockey. Four games this weekend for the first time since February.

Women's Hockey - Robert Morris (16/17 Oct)
After a weekend sweep at RIT, things went downhill for the Engineers as they were swept at home by Robert Morris in the last non-conference games of the early season. Despite playing well on Friday, RPI was shutout 2-0 then fell 3-1 the following night.

39 shots on goal didn't help RPI solve netminder Jessica Dodds on Friday, and the Engineers dropped the first of two games to Robert Morris by a 2-0 margin. The Colonials capitalized on two good opportunities to score their goals on just 14 shots.
Both RMU goals came in the latter half of the second period. The first came when Mackenzie Johnson was able to steal a puck and break in alone on the net to beat Lovisa Selander for a 1-0 lead.
Ashley Vesci added a second goal for the Colonials with 15 seconds left in the second, capitalizing on a 2-on-1 opportunity to double the visitors' lead.
RPI poured on the pressure in the third period, putting 20 shots on Dodds, but couldn't get one past the RMU netminder and the Engineers were shutout for the first time this season.

After outplaying Robert Morris and more than doubling them up in shots on Friday night, RPI found the Colonials to be a tougher fight on Saturday afternoon - and RMU rode their stronger play to a second win and weekend sweep behind another strong effort from Jessica Dodds.
Sarah Till started in net for the Engineers, but ended up being pulled in the middle of the first period after RMU had already scored three goals.
The game's first goals came on the two teams' first shots of the game, with RPI jumping out to a 1-0 lead on a goal by Taylor Schwalbe just 35 seconds in before RMU tied it less than a minute later with a Mackenzie Johnston tally.
RPI got into penalty trouble later in the first period, taking a series of penalties that left RMU on an extended 5-on-3. The Colonials made the most of the opportunity, adding two quick goals at 11:33 and 12:44 to turn a 1-1 tie into a 3-1 lead.
From there, Dodds took over once again and stoned the Engineers for the remaining 40-plus minutes, making a total of 34 saves on 35 shots and an impressive 72 for 73 on the weekend.
With the early non-conference schedule behind them, the Engineers will have a weekend off then travel to Cornell and Colgate to start ECAC play. The Big Red played their first game this weekend, beating Western Ontario 3-2 in exhibition play. Colgate has rushed out to a 3-1 record after a 7-0 exhibition win - including a sweep (5-3, 6-0) of the same Robert Morris team that just swept the Engineers. The Raiders have scored 20 goals in their first four games and look like they will be more of a threat this season than in years past.

And here... we... go.
The season's fully open now, and it's time to get rolling. Tonight and tomorrow, the women face off with a Robert Morris team that was thrashed by Colgate twice two weeks ago. That would be the same Colgate that claimed the last playoff spot last season. Where are the Engineers now? Well, a couple of wins over the Colonials would go a long way to proving that they're going to be in the mix when February rolls around.
The men, meanwhile, embark on their longest possible road-trip as they take a trip to the Last Frontier to showdown with the two Alaska schools in the annual Brice Alaska Goal Rush in Fairbanks. Only about 9 1/2 hours of daylight this time of year in central Alaska, and RPI's going to want to offer even less to opposing snipers if they're going to earn their first bit of hardware since the '14 Mayor's Cup (and first tournament win since the final RPI Tournament in 2010 - which would be the first trophy from outside the Capital District since the '95 ECAC crown).

Women's Hockey - at Robert Morris (4/5 Oct)
With exhibitions behind them, the Engineers took to the road to open up the regular season in the Pittsburgh suburbs, visiting Robert Morris - a team which has become somewhat of a fixture on RPI's non-conference schedule.
After Kelly O'Brien's 6th career shutout in Friday's matchup (a 3-0 victory for RPI), the Engineers found themselves in a two-goal hole with two minutes left in regular, then managed to tie the game with two extra attacker goals before eventually falling in overtime by a 3-2 score.

RPI scored once in each period, and Kelly O'Brien picked up her sixth shutout in a 25-save effort to help the Engineers to a 3-0 victory in their regular season opener against Robert Morris on Friday evening. The victory came despite being outshot 25-20 in the affair.
Mari Mankey scored first for the Engineers, putting home a rebound of Laura Horwood's shot just shy of the midpoint of the first period for a 1-0 lead.
Ali Svoboda tallied on the power play early in the second for a 2-0 lead, taking a pass from Taylor Mahoney and sneaking it past Colonials goaltender Courtney Vinet with traffic in front of the net.
Lauren Wash put the game on ice with an unassisted goal in the third, breaking past the RMU defense for a 2-on-0 with linemate Toni Sanders. Wash turned across the crease and beat Vinet stick side for RPI's third goal.
O'Brien made the RPI goals hold up, turning away five shots in the first, eleven in the second, and nine in the third for the shutout and first star honors. Mankey and Svoboda were the second and third stars.

RPI was outshot by five goals once again on Saturday, but this time the result was much different as the Engineers fell 3-2 in overtime.
The game nearly didn't make it to extra time as Robert Morris held a 2-0 lead late in the third period, but a pair of penalties called against the Colonials with 3:03 left gave RPI a full two minutes of 5-on-3, and with O'Brien on the bench, RPI scored two extra attacker goals in the span of 41 seconds to tie things up.
Brittany Howard opened the scoring for the Colonials at 4:04 of the first period, blasting a slapshot past O'Brien from just inside the blue line to give RMU a 1-0 lead.
That lead was doubled to 2-0 at 17:30 of the opening frame when Thea Imbrogno forced a rebound past O'Brien in a net front scrum on the power play.
RMU goalie Jessica Dodds held the Engineers at bay throughout the second and much of a penalty-filled third period, but the long 5-on-3 opportunity in the final minutes of regulation gave RPI the chance it needed to get back into the game.
Kathryn Schilter cut the Colonials' lead in half with just one second left in the pair of penalties and with O'Brien on the bench. RPI wasted no time in getting the extra attacker back out when play resumed, and it paid off when Taylor Mahoney tied the game at two with just 23 seconds left on the clock.
Unfortunately for the Engineers, the momentum wouldn't help them in overtime, as Kylie St. Louis beat O'Brien at 3:41 of extra time to hand the Colonials a 3-2 victory and a split on the weekend.
RPI returns home next weekend for games against BU (7pm Friday) and Northeastern (4pm Saturday) at Houston Field House.

It's Hockey Time!
Yes, here we are, friends. First weekend in October. The summer's officially behind us, and the next six months (plus, one hopes) are before us with a wild amount of potential.
The women get their meaningful games underway this evening with a pair of games at Robert Morris, a team that has been Mercyhurst's top rivals for the CHA in the last couple of seasons and certainly no pushovers. Should be a good test to see how much RPI's increasingly talented offense can grow as they wait for the Ivies to pick up the sticks.
Tomorrow night in Troy is our first opportunity to see the highly-touted men's team in action, as well as a chance to see the freshmen for the first time. The end result, we've found over the years, is fairly meaningless in exhibition games - we've seen blowout results lead into a season of struggles, we've seen tough losses turn into solid campaigns. We'll be looking more for what the team does together as a unit.
Anyway, if you've been reading WaP for any amount of time, you know well the tradition of the weekend pumpup. A little mojo here for you for opening weekend.

2013-14 Women's Hockey Schedule
We pieced together most of this schedule on Twitter over the last couple of weeks, but the full official schedule was released last week. So here it is. This year's schedule includes just three non-conference games at home (eight are on the road), but there are a couple of earlier opportunities to see the team play non-ECAC squads with a pair of exhibitions in late September - the official opening of the RPI hockey season.

Women's Hockey - Robert Morris (16/17 Nov)
In the first of two weekends of non-conference play on either side of Thanksgiving, the Engineers welcomed the Colonials of Robert Morris University to Houston Field House.
After an unlikely upset of Mercyhurst to win the CHA tournament last season, RMU had jumped out to a 5-2-1 record following four exhibition wins (albeit against mostly weaker competition), and they got the better of the Engineers on the weekend, taking a 3-2 Friday victory before skating to a 1-1 tie on Saturday.

An extra attacker goal late in the third period drew RPI to within one, but it was too little, too late as the Engineers dropped a 3-2 decision to Robert Morris in an early game Friday afternoon.
RMU opened the scoring at 8:31 of the first period, with Maddie Collias picking up the goal by crashing the net while the puck was fired from the near side boards.
The initial RMU lead was short-lived as Taylor Horton evened it up two minutes later, splitting the defense before beating RMU goalie Kristen DiCiocco glove side to make it 1-1.
A parade to the penalty box dictated the pace of the second period, with five penalties on the Colonials and three on the Engineers, but is was only RMU able to score on one of their opportunities. Just seconds past the midpoint of the second, Thea Imbrogno was able to sneak one past Kelly O'Brien with a crowd in front of the crease to make it a 2-1 game.
Cobina Delaney extended RMU's lead to 3-1 with a breakaway goal in the waning minutes of the third period and it looked to have put the game on ice, but Alexa Gruschow picked up her eighth goal of the season at 19:39 when a late power play coupled with the extra attacker had the Engineers skating 6-on-4.
Unfortunately for RPI, 21 seconds was not enough to set up another possession and push for another goal, and the 3-2 score held up for RMU in game one.

A dominant first period and strong third period showed a lot of promise for an RPI squad that's had a tough go of it early in the season, but an RPI goal in the game's opening minutes was matched by one for RMU in the game's final minutes resulting in a 1-1 tie on Saturday afternoon.
It was only 1:12 into the game on Saturday when Jordan Smelker forced home a rebound to give the Engineers an important early lead, and the Engineers proceeded to lay on the pressure for the remainder of the first period. While the puck spent most of the period in the RMU zone, it notably did not find its way into the back of the net, and RPI entered the intermission only ahead by one.
The second period was nearly a complete role reversal, with RMU racking up a 10-3 shot advantage and thoroughly dominating the puck possession game, but fortunately for the Engineers, O'Brien held the visitors off the board during the onslaught, including a pair of great saves on a 2-on-1 opportunity for RMU.
The 1-0 RPI lead held through most of the third, with RPI going back to some of the play that benefited them in the opening frame, but as luck would have it, RPI surrendered the tying goal with less than five minutes after O'Brien made a great save on an RMU shot but wasn't able to get to the rebound before Kelsey Thomas put it home.
A late power play opportunity for RPI in the third, as well as one for RMU in overtime went by with out another goal, and the 1-1 score held up. It was a game the Engineers could have won, but at the same time, a tie was an improvement over the one-goal losses that have been piling up for the Engineers.
In other news, the Engineers finally hired a second assistant coach to replace Collette Youlen, who left during the offseason. Melanie Greene, Vermont '10 was behind the bench this weekend and it was nice to see a full complement of staff behind the bench once again.
RPI travels to Syracuse next weekend for a non-conference pair against the Orange before returning to ECAC play with a pair at Quinnipiac and Princeton the following weekend. Game times are 7pm Friday and 4pm Saturday for both series.

Have Mercy
It's a full weekend of college hockey at Houston Field House this weekend as both the men and the women have a pair of games for you to feast your eyes on tonight and tomorrow. Translation: get thyself to Troy.
Both teams are in a bad way right now - the men, perhaps, a little more than the women. Both have now started off their ECAC schedules with an 0-4-0 record, the women with a -6 goal differential (three of the losses were one goal games) and the men with... a -14 goal differential. Remember, that is in four games, the last three of which were four goal losses. Both are the only teams in the ECAC with no points.
Unfortunately, none of that is set to change this weekend, as both teams are playing a non-conference series, but it does give both sides the opportunity to get things right before heading back out on the hunt for points.
The ladies will take to this ice this afternoon and tomorrow afternoon (3pm starts for both) against College Hockey America's Robert Morris (5-2-1). The Engineers have a few opponents in common with the Colonials, but it's hard to draw much from it - both teams beat Vermont (RMU doing it twice) and both lost to BU, though RMU was able to pull out a tie with Northeastern while RPI lost.
Similarity reigns on the men's side as they battle Atlantic Hockey's Mercyhurst (3-2-1). In this case, it's just Ferris State as a mutual opponent, the Lakers lost and tied with the Bulldogs a week after RPI beat and tied them. They're not quite pushovers, as they went into RIT last week and pulled out a win in a tough barn, besides, it's not like the Engineers are playing well enough lately to take anyone for granted.
It's deja vu around here... the men and women opened last season going a combined 2-7-2 in league play by this point last year, but it's pretty obvious that 0-8-0 is even worse. At any rate, here's a song you can tap your foot to and get the weekend off to the right start, even while it sort of describes the current situation on the hill.
BTW, all four games this weekend are on WRPI... so if you can't be there, be sure to tune in.

Women's Hockey - Robert Morris (21/22 Oct)
A return to Houston Field House for the first home games of the regular season did little to help the Engineers recover from last weekend's sweep at the hands of Niagara, and RPI dropped two more decisions to the Colonials of Robert Morris. A penalty-filled game on Friday saw RPI fall 5-1 despite outshooting RMU 32-16, and the Engineers dropped a 4-2 decision on Saturday despite playing a seemingly better game.

Despite nine Engineer power play opportunities in the game, it was Robert Morris who made their opportunites count, cashing in on consecutive 5-on-3 power play opportunities in the first period to jump out to a 2-0 lead less than ten minutes in.
With Taylor Mahoney and Amanda Castignetti in the box, it took RMU's Rebecca Vint just five seconds off the ensuing offensive zone faceoff to beat netminder Kelly O'Brien for a 1-0 lead. While still down a skater on the remaining penalty, Mahoney was sent right back for roughing, putting RMU back up by two skaters.
The Engineers nearly outlasted the second 5-on-3, but with about 20 seconds remaining in the 2-man advantage, Vint doubled the Colonials' lead, slipping a shot past O'Brien from close range to make it 2-0.
RPI found itself down 5-on-3 yet again before the period was over, but they survived the opportunity and went on to apply some pressure of their own - albeit with nothing to show for it. The period ended with RMU leading 2-0 despite RPI holding an 11-8 shot advantage.
RMU distanced itself a little more early in the second, as Paige Pietrangelo fired a rocket past O'Brien from the point to make it 3-0.
The Engineers would get their only goal of the game on a 5-on-3 opportunity of their own. Just 20 seconds into the 2-man advantage, Madison Marzario took a big shot of her own from the point, beating Kristen DiCiocco to cut the RMU lead to 3-1.
RMU tacked on two more goals in the third period, including a power play marker from Kelsey Thomas and a Thea Imbrogno empty-netter for good measure.
Even with the lopsided 32-16 shot count in favor of the Engineers, RMU mostly controlled the flow of the game from the moment the Engineers took their first penalty, making it appear like RPI was going through the motions but was not entirely into the game.
Another positive came out of the game for the Colonials, whose Brianna Delaney broke RMU's record for career points when she notched an assist on the first goal of the game. She would go on to hit the 100-point mark on Saturday.

If nothing else, RPI cleaned up the penalty problem between Friday night and Saturday afternoon, but that alone wasn't enough to get the Engineers a different result. In a much more closely-contested match, RPI and RMU played a much more technically-sound and evenly-matched affair, which was never really in the bag until an empty netter late in the third period.
While RPI did cut back on penalties significantly on Saturday, they did still take the first penalty of the game - and RMU capitalized quickly. Brianna Delaney took a pass in front of the net and beat Brianna Piper below the blocker for a 1-0 lead.
RPI tied the game a few minutes later when Laura Guillemette banked a shot off a defender's skate past DiCiocco to make it one-all. The tie held up through most of the first period until Dayna Newsom took a pass in the crease and beat Piper to make it 2-1.
RMU extended their lead to two goals at 5:01 of the third period, when Delaney scored her second of the afternoon to make it 3-1. Again, RPI answered quickly, with Jordan Smelker taking a pass from Andie Le Donne and roofing a shot over DiCiocco to bring RPI back within one.
RPI pushed for the tying goal, but lost some momentum in the third period when they went down 5-on-3 in what had otherwise been a penalty free game after Le Donne's in the first period. Rebecca Vint picked up her third goal on the weekend as she put the puck into the empty net at 19:42 to put the game away with a 4-2 final.
RPI remains home next weekend as they open up ECAC play against Quinnipiac and Princeton. Both games will be at 3pm since the men will be facing off against Colorado College at 7pm after each. While the games are not currently scheduled for broadcast, don't be surprised if Friday afternoon's game gets picked up by WRPI. Saturday's game, which would air head-to-head with the Dutchman's Shoes football game at Union, will certainly not be broadcast. Both games will of course have live stats and video available via the RPI website, and live updates provided at Without a Peer.

Spotlight Sideshow
OK, let's be honest. When the men march into South Bend tonight, they're the afterthoughts. They'll be looking across the ice at a Notre Dame team that is ranked sixth in the nation, coming off a Frozen Four trip last season, on their way to Hockey East with a fresh TV deal in hand, and, on this night, opening a fancy new arena.
Meanwhile, we've got injury after injury to deal with. No Higgs or Laliberte, likely until the beginning of November at the earliest. No O'Grady, out indefinitely with a concussion. And, of course, no scoring in over 120 minutes.
Safe to say we're the underdogs.

Women's Hockey - at Robert Morris (11/27-11/28)
The Engineers spent the Thanksgiving holiday on the road to Moon Township, PA where they faced off against non-conference foe Robert Morris in a weekend series. The Colonials, with a 0-3-1 CHA record (and 4-9-1 overall) looked like they might provide RPI an opportunity to pick up a couple wins before getting into the bulk of the ECAC schedule. Indeed, RPI cashed in on the opportunity Friday afternoon with a handy 5-2 victory but the Engineers' Saturday woes continued as they went on to fall 3-1 on Saturday.
Whitney Naslund was honored with selection as the ECAC Player of the Week for her performance in the two games, in which she went 2-2-4 and 1-0-1 for a combined five points and eight shots on goal.

Coming out for the second period, the Engineers took it to the Colonials much like they did for stretches against New Hampshire, and the effort paid off with two quick tallies by Whitney Naslund and Laura Gersten at 6:00 and 8:42 of the middle frame. The momentum shifted back to RMU late in the period, but despite outshooting the Engineers 12-6 in the period, the Colonials couldn't find the twine and went to the locker room down two goals.

NASLUND NAMED ECAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Senior forward chosen by the league's coaches after five-point weekend
TROY, N.Y. – ECAC Hockey has announced its weekly women’s ice hockey award winners for the week ending November 29 and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student-athlete Whitney Naslund was chosen as the conference’s Player of the Week.
A senior right winger from Bloomington, Minn., Naslund recorded a team-best five points on three goals and two assists as the Engineers went 1-1-0 last week. She also added a team-best eight shots and was a +4. In a 5-2 victory at Robert Morris, Naslund scored two goals, including one on the power play, and assisted on two others. She then tallied the lone goal in a 3-1 loss to the Colonials the following day.
Through 17 games this season, Naslund leads the team in scoring with a team-best eight goals and five assists for 13 points. She also ranks 15th nationally and fourth among ECAC players in power play goals with three (0.12 average).
Last season, the former Bloomington Jefferson High School standout played in 37 games, leading the team in goals with 15. Four of her tallies came on the power play, while four other were game-winning. She finished second on the squad in assists (14) and points (29), while helping lead the team to the ECAC Hockey Championship Game. For her efforts, which included two goals in RPI’s 3-2 overtime victory against Harvard in the league Semifinals, she was named to the All-Tournament team.
As a sophomore, Naslund led the team in points (22), assists (14) and short-handed goals (2). She was second on the team in goals (8) and played in all 33 contests. During her freshman campaign, Naslund recorded team-highs in points (28) and assists (17), while finishing second in goals (11). She helped RPI to its first appearance in the ECAC Hockey Playoffs, recording a hat-trick against Dartmouth
In 122 contests, Naslund has recorded 42 goals and 50 assists for 92 points. She has been recognized by ECAC Hockey nine times in her career, having been named to the league’s Weekly Honor Roll six times and Rookie of the Week twice prior to her senior season.
Rensselaer (5-8-4; 2-2-2 ECAC Hockey) returns to league play this weekend when it plays a home-and-home series with area-rival Union College. The Engineers head to Schenectady on Saturday (2pm) and then welcome the Dutchwomen on Sunday (12pm) to the Houston Field House.

The Colonials iced the game with an empty netter at 19:46 as RPI desperately tried for the equalizer, but they couldn't find it. Shots in the third were 12-7 in RPI's favor, for a game total of 22-17 RPI.

NASLUND NAMED ECAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Senior forward chosen by the league's coaches after five-point weekend
TROY, N.Y. – ECAC Hockey has announced its weekly women’s ice hockey award winners for the week ending November 29 and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) student-athlete Whitney Naslund was chosen as the conference’s Player of the Week.
A senior right winger from Bloomington, Minn., Naslund recorded a team-best five points on three goals and two assists as the Engineers went 1-1-0 last week. She also added a team-best eight shots and was a +4. In a 5-2 victory at Robert Morris, Naslund scored two goals, including one on the power play, and assisted on two others. She then tallied the lone goal in a 3-1 loss to the Colonials the following day.
Through 17 games this season, Naslund leads the team in scoring with a team-best eight goals and five assists for 13 points. She also ranks 15th nationally and fourth among ECAC players in power play goals with three (0.12 average).
Last season, the former Bloomington Jefferson High School standout played in 37 games, leading the team in goals with 15. Four of her tallies came on the power play, while four other were game-winning. She finished second on the squad in assists (14) and points (29), while helping lead the team to the ECAC Hockey Championship Game. For her efforts, which included two goals in RPI’s 3-2 overtime victory against Harvard in the league Semifinals, she was named to the All-Tournament team.
As a sophomore, Naslund led the team in points (22), assists (14) and short-handed goals (2). She was second on the team in goals (8) and played in all 33 contests. During her freshman campaign, Naslund recorded team-highs in points (28) and assists (17), while finishing second in goals (11). She helped RPI to its first appearance in the ECAC Hockey Playoffs, recording a hat-trick against Dartmouth
In 122 contests, Naslund has recorded 42 goals and 50 assists for 92 points. She has been recognized by ECAC Hockey nine times in her career, having been named to the league’s Weekly Honor Roll six times and Rookie of the Week twice prior to her senior season.
Rensselaer (5-8-4; 2-2-2 ECAC Hockey) returns to league play this weekend when it plays a home-and-home series with area-rival Union College. The Engineers head to Schenectady on Saturday (2pm) and then welcome the Dutchwomen on Sunday (12pm) to the Houston Field House.
